The Knock

by invitation, and by instinct

theknock

A door that only opens for the people already meant to find it.

What it is

There is a number. Not printed anywhere, not searchable, passed from one hand to another the way a good address always has been. Call it, and someone on the other end asks very little — only where you are standing, and whether you're ready to be somewhere else.

What follows isn't a taxi and it isn't a party bus. It's a private carriage, timed to meet others who are, tonight, exactly like you. You are carried together — gradually, deliberately — toward rooms with more of your kind in them than you're used to finding in one place.

How it moves

i
You call the switchboard, and give a location and a window of time — nothing else.
ii
A carriage is arranged around your schedule and the schedules of others converging from elsewhere in the city.
iii
The ride is not one leg but several — a sequence of small arrivals, each one a little deeper into the evening than the last.
iv
What you drink, and how far you go, stays entirely yours to decide. No one carries a tab but you.

“The first time is a favor. After that, it's membership.”

Contact the switchboard

Leave word, and the line will find its way back to you.

your name

phone

party size

where to find you preferred night & time anything the switchboard should know

This opens your mail app with the details filled in — nothing is sent until you press send there too.

Members hear the shuttles before anyone else does, and move between them at will. The first knock is how you're found. Everything after is how you're kept.
